AR Denarius (20mm, 3.24g, 7h). Rome mint, struck mid-March - Sept 18, 83 (Second Issue), ihajn.
IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG P M, head laureate right; TR POT II OCS VIIII DES X P P, Aventine Minerva replica (ἀπεικόνισμα) standing right on processional litter (ferculum), with spear and shield, owl to right (M2).
RIC 164 var (this coin noted, RIC p.277, note 18A, OCS instead of COS on reverse).
Ex Harlan Berk, ex Curtis Clay coll., ex Münz Zentrum.
Note the feathery Aegis extending down Minerva's left leg. This being the first appearance of this coin type, perhaps the unique rendering is due to the engraver’s direct observation of this parade float in one particular circus parade. The float itself seems cramped as well, and the iconography on the tapestry dangling from the sides is likewise imperfectly rendered. Neither issue seems to appear on other examples of RIC 164 (two in this collection), nor does it ever repeat throughout the series.
